Donovan Mitchell with historical performance

Donovan Mitchell

The 2022-2023 NBA season has been one of the most watched and exciting basketball seasons in recent memory. From LeBron James’ record-breaking run to Jason Tatum’s impressive scoring night after night, there is no shortage of excellent performances this year. Donovan Mitchell, a rising star in the NBA, has also made his mark with a historical performance that some classify as the best in the last 17 years of the NBA.

Donovan, a scoring machine

A Donovan Mitchell from another planet, an actual scoring machine, guided the epic comeback of the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Chicago Bulls (145-134) this Monday with 71 points.

The Cavs trailed by 21 points in the second quarter when Donovan Mitchell turned into a true Super Saiyan to crush his opponents.

A performance of this level has not been seen since 2006, when Kobe Bryant scored 81 with the Los Angeles Lakers against the Toronto Raptors.

Donovan Mitchell finished the game with a double-double of 71 points, 22 of 34 shooting, seven 3-pointers, 20 of 25 free throws, and eight rebounds and eleven assists.

Hard fight until the last minute

The Bulls did not make things easy for the Cavs, who, thanks to Mitchell’s outstanding performance, managed to take the game to overtime by missing the second of two free kicks, capturing the rebound, and scoring with a shot to the board to tie the game at 130.

Those of Chicago lost the motivation and fled anamically before the epic comeback of the Cavaliers, which allowed Mitchell and company to finish the job of crushing the Bulls.

“First, congratulate my teammates, we fought. I know I scored 70 points, but I wouldn’t be here without them. We did it as a group, my teammates put me in a good position and I made the plays,” Mitchell said after the game. Cleveland.

“I looked for a way to win. I told JB (Bickerstaff) not to take me away. I tried different things and I feel blessed,” he added.

Wilt Chamberlain has held the NBA record since March 1962, with the 100 points he scored for Philadelphia. Mitchell’s 71 points are the seventh-highest score in NBA history. “To be up there, in the record books, with guys like Wilt, it’s really an honor,” he said in post-game remarks with a big smile on his lips.

In addition, later on, social networks, he stated that he knows he must keep working to keep up. “I’m extremely blessed, humbled that I’m in that company.

I’ve always believed I can be one of the best players in this league, but I’ve got to keep working.” The player tweeted.

Mitchell is the key to reaching the playoffs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers reached an agreement with the Utah Jazz this summer to sign Donovan Mitchell, in exchange for three players and three first-round draft picks, in the season’s biggest trade. So far, he’s averaging 21.4 points per game, somewhat below what’s expected of him as a three-time All-Star.

The Cavs hope Mitchell will be the player to lead them back to the NBA Finals and lead the team into a new era of glory not seen since the days of LeBron.

Regarding the chances of having a good season, the oddsmakers see the Cavaliers as follows:

Cleveland Cavalier’s odds to win the 2022/23 NBA Finals are +2200, which places them in 11th place, somewhat away from the favorites, while their odds to win the 2022/23 Eastern Conference are +950, and to win the 2022/ 23 Central are +210.

With the performance shown, the Cavs have shown they are playoff material, and the chances of hosting a first-round series are high, but not sure.

It must be remembered that last season Cleveland was in the top 3 of the East for January, but injuries hit the team, falling to eighth place and being out of the Play-In.

Currently in fourth place, the team has tickets to this year’s Play-In Tournament in their pockets if they maintain their position in the remaining games.
